For those who are asking, those weird tubes in the farm fields are protecting chestnut and other nut and fruit trees from deer nibbles.
Initially, the local Agricultural Stewardship Association (ASA) is allowing us to think far into the future. By April 2021 the land is protected as farm land in perpetuity thanks to ASA.
Agroforestry:
We are partnering with other local farmers, thanks to Agroforestry Management LLC, in establishing nut and fruit trees and shrubs on the hills. With the help of Mark Shepard (Restoration Agriculture, Water for Every Farm) who designed the new paths that rain water now takes....flowing sideways in and out of swales and ponds, irrigating the newly planted trees. No more erosion gullies.
Regeneration:
Currently advised by John Kempf's organization Advancing Eco Agriculture, we are learning more about regenerative practices, both in the existing plantings and for our future perennial agroforest in the hills. Hurray for knowledge and a bit of faith in the ways of living organisms and their interactions!
Future You-pick:
We plan to add some form of nut and tree fruit you-pick to the gentle hills across from the current blueberry field. Stay tuned.
