By April 2021, Hay Berry Farm LLC will be protected as forever farmland, thanks to the efforts of the Agricultural Stewardship Association based in Greenwich, NY.
Our practices include thinking about the life of our soils first, importing a minimum of off-farm inputs, avoiding all biocides and all toxic synthetic substances, introducing and encouraging a balanced and diverse array of plants, animals, insects, birds, etc. When needed, we only use fertilizers and immune boosters that are OMRI approved.

Currently we are transforming parts of the farm to more permanent agriculture. That is, we are finding ways to save and use the rain water that flows over our hills. We are adding more perennial nut and fruit trees. We continue to keep in mind diversity of species and diversity of spaces.
With a long history as farmland, this beautiful you-pick farm was cleared for sheep in years past. From the 1940s to the turn of the century it became a family dairy operation.
The first blueberries arrived in 2008, after we spent a year to prepare the soil for planting. Now the fields host eleven varieties of blueberries, fourteen varieties of Lavendula Angustifolia, and perennial herbs and flowers. We also support an abundance of diverse wild flowers and trees, which create habitat for beneficial insects and birds. The Shiitake mushrooms grow on logs in the woods.
Water from surrounding hills passes through Shingle Hollow Brook and irrigates the fields. The wetland is home to great blue heron, geese, ducks, red-winged blackbirds and other native birds, amphibians, insects and small mammals. We count on our honey bees and equally important native bees and bumble bees, to pollinate the berries and other crops.
